Majority of Canadians set to travel this summer, survey finds

-- Oh Canada: 77 per cent of Canadians will choose domestic vacations this summer --

TORONTO, May 21 /CNW/ - Despite recent world issues, both domestic and abroad, the travel industry is showing strong signs of recovery. In fact, a majority of Canadians (58 per cent) plan to embark on vacation before Labour Day, according to a recent Expedia.ca TM/Ipsos-Reid poll. Seventy- seven per cent of these travellers will stay in Canada for their holidays. The survey also shows that the Internet continues to take an increasingly important role for Canadians planning and booking their travel.

"The tide is starting to turn for the travel industry. We anticipated a less positive result with regards to Canadians'summer travel intentions, and are encouraged by the more upbeat response,"says Stuart MacDonald, managing director, Expedia Canada Corp."With concerns over world geo-political issues dwindling and the lifting of the World Health Organization's Toronto travel ban, the survey indicates Canadians are gradually returning to normal travel patterns."

Go Canada Go

This summer, many Canadians are choosing to stay in Canada rather than making the trek to far-off destinations. Forty-four per cent will explore Canadian provinces outside their own, while one in three (35 per cent) plan on travelling within their own province.

Plugged-in Canadians purchase more travel online

  • More than half (52 per cent) of all Canadians have reported using the Internet in the last two years to research travel destinations.
  • Twenty-nine per cent of Canadians have used the Internet to book or purchase travel during the past two years. This figure is up three per cent since the Expedia.ca(TM)/Ipsos-Reid poll released in November 2002.

When in Rome...some revealing facts about Canadians

Vacations are often the best time to let loose and break free of inhibitions. According to survey results, Canadian men are more likely than Canadian women to mimic local beach customs while on holiday.

  • Forty-one per cent of Canadian men reported they would be willing to don a Speedo if they were visiting a country where bikini-type suits for men were the norm.
  • Thirty-five per cent of Canadian women indicated they would hit the beach"au natural"and join topless sunbathers when visiting a country where this practice is considered normal.

G'day mate, eh?

When Canadians consider planning an exotic vacation, the land Down Under comes out on top. If given the opportunity, and if cost was not a factor, 38 per cent of Canadians would choose hiking in the Australian Outback over trekking through the Amazon Jungle in South America (15 per cent), heli-skiing in the Rockies (12 per cent), running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain (10 per cent) or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa (nine per cent.)

About the survey findings

The survey was conducted between May 6 and May 8, 2003. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 1,000 adult Canadians. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled.
