Expedia.ca becomes the First Canadian eCommerce Site to Receive PricewaterhouseCoopers' Seal for OnLine Privacy

Privacy Policy Puts Customers in Control of Their Personal Information

Toronto, ON, May 18, 2001 – Expedia Canada Corp., operator of Expedia.ca™, one of Canada's leading online travel stores, today announced the first successful completion of a Canadian website privacy audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Expedia.ca also becomes the first eCommerce site in Canada to post all three privacy and security seals – PricewaterhouseCoopers' Privacy Audit, and the privacy seals from Better Business Bureau Online and TRUSTe that were awarded to Expedia.ca last year.

Expedia.ca's privacy policy, available at http://www.expedia.ca/daily/enc4105/service/privacy.asp, is a comprehensive commitment to ensuring the security and confidentiality of all its customers. The PricewaterhouseCoopers' Privacy Audit subjected Expedia® to a series of rigorous inspections that verify the company's compliance with its written privacy policy. The resulting attestation report provides assurances to Expedia® Canada's customers that it adheres to its information-privacy policy.

The company received the PricewaterhouseCoopers seal upon completion of the privacy audit that examined the following:

  • Disclosure of its privacy practices for electronic commerce,
     
  • Compliance with such privacy practices, and
     
  • Maintenance of effective controls to provide reasonable assurance that personally identifiable information obtained as a result of electronic commerce was protected in conformity with its disclosed privacy practices.

These criteria are based on the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) WebTrust Privacy Criteria (www.cica.ca) and that of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) (www.aicpa.org).


Description of the Attestation Report:

PricewaterhouseCoopers provides online retailers such as Expedia Canada with an attestation report that includes the following kinds of assurances:

  • The organization discloses business and information privacy practices and executes transactions in accordance with those practices.
     
  • The organization has controls in place to protect the privacy of personal information collected, including credit card information.
     
  • Transactions entered into with the organization will be carried out in accordance with the stated terms, including billing and returned goods policies.
     
  • Information about the availability of the organization's network is disclosed and reasonably maintained.
     
  • If advertisements are sold by the organization, those advertisements have been presented to the visitors to the organization's Web site, giving validity to the amounts billed for advertising services.

The Privacy Audit focuses specifically on risks that an organization has identified as being important to them, their customers, and their trading partners. The resulting attestation audit opinion can be displayed on the organization's Web site for a predetermined period of time, after which another audit should be performed to ensure that the report is always current.
