Forget sending Valentine’s Day cards professing your love to that special someone.  On the most romantic day of the year, highlighted international and local destinations where love-fools have found an increasingly popular way to publically - and securely - declare their love. 

Love locks- engraved locks of any shape and size - have been popping up on bridges, fences and other landmarks  around the world creating shrines dedicated to true love.  Popular in other parts of the world for decades, the trend has started to take hold in Canada with love lock locations reported in both Toronto and Vancouver.

Mecsek Mountains, Pécs, Hungary  - This UNESCO World Heritagesite began the international tradition of “love padlocks” in the 1980s. Local students began hanging padlocks on an iron fence linking the main square to the town’s medieval cathedral to show their heart’s commitment.

Hohenzollern Bridge, Cologne, Germany  - The first love padlocks appeared in 2008 and has now grown to become one of the most impressive collections of love locks in the world, and arguably one of Europe’s most popular destinations for young couples.

Luzhkov Bridge, Moscow, Russia –In downtown Moscow stands what has been described as a forest of “love trees” or “padlock trees”.  The location has become so popular with lovers that the local authority had to install tree-like sculptures to provide more space for locks.

Mount Huang, Huangshan, China - One of China’s most famous, scenic spots, Mount Huang is also well-known as an ideal place to hang a love lock from the Lotus Peak’s chain fence.  Lovers attach their lock and throw their key into the abyss below to seal their love forever.

Ponte Vecchio, Florence, Italy- Legend has it that if you and your loved one attach a padlock to the famous bridge and then throw the key into the Arno River below, your love will last forever. The appeal of eternal love has drawn millions of couples to one of Italy’s most famous cities.

Vancouver Island and Toronto, Canada - Canadians may not boast an international reputation for being overly romantic, but love lock locations are blossoming here as well.  The Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet on Vancouver Island in Canada and the Humber Bridge in Toronto have become a hub for lovebirdswho want to put their love on lockdown.  Despite initial disapproval from Toronto City Hall, the love locks remain on the bridge – for now.
